In the Shadow of Heart Mountain

Spent the week around Cody, Wyoming filming for Vanessa’s documentary ‘In the Shadow of Heart Mountain’, which is about the Heart Mountain Japanese ‘relocation camp’, or perhaps better described as a concentration camp. On Thursday we climbed the 8,000 foot peak that hovers over the former camp site (see panoramic photos).

These were shot with the Canon 5D Mark II and stitched together using Photoshop.

Eric in Still Shot

Ran across an issue this week when shooting a short film for a classmate. We were shooting on my Canon 5D Mark II with a Filemate 32GB Compact Flash Card. The first night we shot less than 20 gigs of data. At the end of the day I offloaded the movie files but left them on the card since I had others in case I ran over and figured I could offload everything onto the editorial computer at the end of night two. After we finished, with about 25 GBs of data the offload stalled. I took it home and tried there and it stalled again and then the card failed to mount.

Two days later and $40 for PhotoRecovery software, which by the way had excellent technical support that walked through everything with me and helped me pick the best option, I had the data off the card.

Lesson: offload often and don’t fill cards.

A few stills from my recent production in Oregon. Shot on the Canon 5d Mark II, we also used a Glidetrack, Indie Jib, Karen’s custom dolly setup on an old set of steel rails at the location.

Color Calibrate your monitor, for all our sakes!

A friend of a friend, who happens to be a mathematics genius whose hobby is hardware color calibration, recently used his X-Rite Color Calibration device to create an ICC profile for my laptop. Since most people don’t have access to Glen, they should follow these instructions to at least do a better-than-default calibration. I have noticed significant improvement in the display of video on my equipment.

Canon 5D Mark II and the HPX170P

I wanted to try a little experiment mixing footage from the Canon 5D Mark II and the Panasonic HPX170P – mainly because I have ready access to both these cameras and would like to shoot with both and be able to mix the footage for a variety of reasons. I love the ergonomics, sound capture abilities and overall robust nature of the HPX. The Canon shoots with my L lenses and is capable of some wonderfully rich video with narrow DOF and lovely Bokeh. Both good cameras and useful for different purposes.

Tiffen Filter test with the Canon 5D Mark II

Karen and I went to Yerba Buena park the other day with my Canon 5D Mark II, the Cinevate baseplate and Karen’s RedRock Micro Matte Box. From school we picked up Tiffen 4×4 glass filters:

ND6, Black Pro-Mist
Warm Pro-Mist
Ultra Contrast 1
Low Contrast 1/2
ND 6

We took one still of each filter and a short HD video clip which I compiled through FCP and Compressor. The videos are best viewed in HD on Vimeo.

Went for a sort of urban hike/hike the other day from the Golden Gate bridge, up around the point past the Lands End and the Cliff House to the end of the Judah line, then rode that home. Along the way I snapped this classic SF shot. Click to view the full image.
